Yes, it is a problem and I, too, support organized efforts to help. I do not, however, feel comfortable giving loose change and cash to the homeless simply because I don’t know how they’re using it and oftentimes I think it’s not so productively.

I recently organized a homeless feeding on skid row. It was funny how they wanted more than one lunch when there wasn’t enough for everyone to start with. I funded the small activity and each sack lunch (turkey sandwich, chips, granola bar, juice box) cost less than a dollar. It would be so much better if people would stop handing out dollars and try to use that money for some solid food. I don’t give dollars, but I do feel for the human need on skid row…
